As expected Dewey during the spring of 2006 Dewey returned to his championship caliber performance ability after his surgery last fall to remove a bone chip. While we did not come away with any titles, I was very pleased and felt that he left a very good impression with all of the people that got to see him perform. Dewey also surpassed the 30 win mark, if you look through his wins below, you will note that those wins are not bloated with puppy wins, he was run very sparingly as a puppy and for most of his derby season. The other notable thing that occurred this spring was his 2 horseback placements, displaying even more so, his versatility in performing in different venues.

While limited in breeding to field trial quality dogs he has been producing some fine quality dogs. He was bred to Grouse Ridge Francie and this litter produced a young female that Dave Terharr of MI was very pleased with, but she met an unfortunate accident with a car. The accident ended her field trialing days, but Dave is planning on breeding her in the future, because he was so happy with her fine qualities. That same litter also produced Autumn's First Flight who placed 3rd in a 34 dog stake at the Beaverton Grouse Dog Club as an off-aged dog.

Dewey is sired by grouse woods champion, and the only winner of the Flanagan, Seminatore and Foster Awards, Chip's Super Chunk. The dam, CH Sassy's Topper, was runner-up to Chunky during their derby year for the Flanagan Award. Several of his littermates and dogs from this repeat breeding have also placed in shooting dog stakes, and grouse trial derby and puppy stakes, including the 2001 Grand National Grouse Futurity Puppy Classic, Inaugural International Cover Dog Futurity Puppy Classic, Venango Trial Puppy Classic, National Walking Shooting Dog Futurity and International Cover Dog Futurity. Dewey placed second in a shooting dog stake before the age of two. He again, showed plenty of maturity for a young dog by winning the Region II Ama. Walking Ch. as a first year shooting dog, while just 2 years of age. He has placed in trials on both planted quail and Ruffed Grouse. He displays plenty of style, is very easy to handle, with a want to please attitude and points standing on top of his toes and a high style. When he shows up at a trial he is usually one of the odds on favorites.

Quotes

"He laid out to the limits and tallied three crackerjack finds. He was very fancy and hard driving. Dewey, though only approaching the end of his first year of mature competition, has done quite a bit of winning. He is the reigning Region 2 Amateur Walking Champion and won runner-up at the U. S. Complete Northeast Regional Championship in April."
"Fort Cherry Dewey ran the race of the stake. Big, forward and streaking, he took in the field edges and the woods and was an eyeful to watch. He was scouted three times but found by his handler every time right ahead on course. He ran hard from start to finish and was forward throughout."
Ryan Frame, Empire State Walking Dog Classic, American Field, July 19, 2003

"Young Dewey had 10 wins on record prior to acquiring his first title here. Perhaps the most notable of these and certainly one which accurately presaged success on this occasion was his placement in the 12th National Walking Shooting Dog Futurity last spring. Dewey's high tail carriage running and pleasing style on point combine with birdfinding ability to make him a consistent threat. On this occasion he tallied five well-spaced finds during a consistent hour which featured steady application and logical selection of objectives. While some felt Dewey could have reached more boldly in his search none could argue that his ever-forward approach netted a desired result."
"Handler Jeff Crum showed confidence and savvy piloting his precocious setter to the top spot. Jeff has been a welcome addition to the trial scene in recent years and Dewey's victory represented Jeff's first titular win, but probably not his last. Dewey is in the string of noted Pennsylvania pro Dave Hughes, along with Jeff's other top prospect, Right of Way."
"Grouse Ridge Rolly (P. Flanagan) drew first blood at 3 in the upper end of the breakaway field with Fort Cherry Dewey (Crum) honoring. Dewey countered at 5 along the planted pine trail with good work on quail as Rolly came through the hardwoods for a nice back. Rolly responded at 10 with a pretty point but nothing was raised. Up ahead at 15 Dewey stood along the trail near the first pond; Jeff cautioned his charge strongly as he attempted to flush a running bird. Rolly came up the creek to honor again. Dewey connected again at 20 as we hit the open fields, flagging some until handler got in front. Both dogs worked the open fields in forward fashion, Dewey worked the nearer objectives and Rolly hitting the outside ones. Dewey scored a nice find at 29. The pair hunted well through the thick woods toward the creek bottom. Dewey pointed again at 42 along the pond bank tightening as handler approached and showing high style and polished manners for the flush. He was found on point at 50 in the second growth beyond the pond. A lengthy flushing attempt was followed by a swift sure relocation. The bird was put to wing. Both dogs continued their consistent efforts until time."
Katie Flanagan, Reg 2 Ama. Walking Shooting Dog Ch.,American Field, February 1, 2003

2003 PA Grouse Trial Open All-Age - "Jeff Crum again swept second with his younger charge, setter male Fort Cherry Dewey. “Dewey” is very similar to his kennel mate “Kirby”, strong in build, strong on the ground, and slashingly stylish. “Dewey” also ran a strong hour but lacked ever so slightly the maturity of application of the first place dog. He shared an excellently handled find on a grouse with his brace mate. His bell stopped in a thick cut on the backside of course four. Soon after stopping his brace mate, Mr. Biggs, came into the area and stopped as well. Both handlers went in and flushed a grouse for the mannerly dogs. “Dewey” went on to reach strong and finish well."
Craig Peters

"Fort Cherry Dewey captured the hotly contested fourth spot. Dewey was handled by his owner Jeff Crum of McDonald, Pa. He was bred by Mike Groy out of his fine producer Sassy’s Topper. Sire for this litter was another local great Chip’s Super Chunk. The cross proves to be a good one for others from the litter that ran in the stake also shown fine potential. Jeff has spent many hours grooming this young prospect and it showed as the two seemed to be in mental contact as Dewey always was where he should be with little guidance from Jeff. His beginning casts were strong and purposeful as he searched the initial Aspen cuts. His first find came at the turn with good style and advanced manners. After Jeff released him to the front , this re-energized setter started a quest for more game that had him stylishly charging and stretching out to distant objectives. Dewey’s second find came on a nice cast on the hillside as we headed down the valley floor. This Tri-colored setter again showing very pleasing style with a erect tail and head stretched out. The bird well located. He was once again steady to wing and shot. Dewey again set out in search of game, this time his stand came towards the end of the brace. After a lengthy relocation effort with Dewey thoroughly searching the cover for the running bird, an unproductive was called by Jeff. With this time expired . Another very solid performance turned in by dog and handler."
Barry Leezer, 12th National Walking Shooting Dog Futurity, American Field, 2002

"Fort Cherry Dewey (Crum), a setter male, was fast, forward and chewing up some ground. Dewey has excellent carriage and a very distinctive black spot on his tail base. Owner Jeff Crum has a prospect in this attractive youngster."
Lloyd B. Murray, Jr., Grand National Grouse Futurity, American Field, December 8, 2001
